Paintball is a competitive team sport where players eliminate opponents by hitting them with paint-filled gelatin capsules fired from a marker. It's played in formats including speedball, woodsball, MilSim, scenario, and X-Ball.

How old do you have to be to play paintball?

Most paintball fields require players to be at least 10 years old. Some offer low-impact paintball for players as young as 8. Always check with your local field.

Is paintball good for a birthday party?

Yes — paintball is one of the most popular birthday party activities. Most fields offer complete party packages including gear rental, paint, a dedicated referee, and reserved field time. Works for ages 10+ and all skill levels.

What paintball format should I play?

Speedball is best for competition. Woodsball is ideal for beginners and casual players. MilSim suits tactical/realistic gameplay enthusiasts. Scenario is for large story-driven events. Use our format finder quiz at paintball-paintball.com to get a personalized recommendation.

Yes. At organized fields paintball sees only about 1.1 injuries per 10,000 participants annually (roughly 4,100 US emergency-department visits in 2022 across millions of players). ASTM-approved paintball masks (not airsoft masks, which are unsafe for paintball) reduce eye-injury risk by 92%, and mandatory 280 fps velocity limits keep the game safe. Always wear an ASTM paintball-rated mask and follow field rules.

Game Formats — Deep Dive

Every Format Explained

Six formats, six different games entirely — each with its own culture, gear, and community. Find the one that fits how you want to play.

Speedball

The original competitive format. Fixed bunkers, mounds, or structures on a mirrored field — the core concept is symmetry, so neither side ever has an advantage. Pure skill, angles, and nerve decide every point.

Mirrored FieldsFixed BunkersClassic

Airball

Speedball's modern tournament evolution: inflatable bunkers on turf or grass, still perfectly mirrored. This is the pro-circuit game — 3-man and 5-man formats, snap-shooting, breakout sprints, and points decided in seconds.

TournamentInflatablesPro Circuit

Woodsball

Playing ball in the woods — that's the whole concept, and it's glorious. Natural terrain, real cover, games that run for hours. It can be a structured tournament format or just pure fun between friends. This is where most players fall in love with the sport.

Natural TerrainTournament or RecHours of Play

Hundreds of players charging at the start of a big game — scenario paintball breakout

Scenario & Big Games

Two flavors, one thing in common: huge player counts. Scenario games are mission-based — pull off objectives, solve problems, use your head, not just your marker. Big games skip the missions entirely: a massive crowd of players getting together just to play ball. Think Invasion of Normandy — 4,000+ players.

Mission-BasedHuge NumbersMulti-Day

MilSim / Magfed

Real-life muscle-memory training with paint. Magfed markers, limited rounds, realistic reloads, and disciplined movement — perfect for LEO and military training, and for players taking the game seriously. Tournaments exist, but this format is about the craft.

MagfedLEO & MilitaryTraining-Grade

OPFOR

Opposition Forces — the most serious end of the sport. Force-on-force training where paintball provides realistic, marking, man-on-man pressure for law enforcement and military teams. Not a casual Saturday: this is training that happens to use paint.

Birthday Parties

Why Paintball is the Best
Birthday Party Ever

Many of today's most passionate paintball players played their first game at a birthday party. One afternoon on the field is all it takes. Here's why it's the ultimate celebration choice. Birthday party planning guide →

🎯

Nobody Forgets It

Laser tag, bowling, and escape rooms are fun. But nobody calls you a week later saying "remember that laser tag game?" Paintball stories last for years. It's the party they'll be telling friends about.

👥

Works for Any Group Size

Ideal for 10–20 players, but most fields handle groups from 6 up to 50+. Whether it's a small crew or a massive squad, paintball scales perfectly. Private sessions available for exclusive group play.

🎂

All Ages, All Skill Levels

Works for kids 10+, teens, adults, and even 40+ groups. Low-impact paintball options available for younger or more cautious players. No experience needed — fields provide full training before every game.

📦

Fields Handle Everything

Most fields offer complete birthday packages: all gear, paint, a dedicated referee, reserved field time, and party area. You just show up with your guests. No setup, no cleanup, no stress.

🛡️

Safer Than You Think

At organized fields, paintball injuries are rare — about 1.1 per 10,000 players a year. Every game starts with a full safety briefing, ASTM-approved paintball masks are mandatory at all times, and all protective gear is provided.

🌿

Actually Gets People Outside

In an era of screens and passive entertainment, paintball forces everyone to be active, social, and completely present. Parents love it. Kids love it. Even the reluctant guest is smiling by game two.

💰

Genuinely Great Value

Full birthday packages typically range from $25–$60 per person including all gear, paint, and field fees. Compare that to escape rooms, go-karts, or theme parks — paintball delivers far more memory per dollar.

🎮

Multiple Game Modes

Fields run Capture the Flag, Elimination, Zombie Attack, VIP/Hostage, and more — all in one session. Every game is a completely different experience. Boredom is simply not possible.

Book a Paintball Party

Most fields can accommodate your party within 1–2 weeks. Call ahead and ask about dedicated birthday packages — many include gear for everyone, a private referee, and a reserved party area.

Safety Guide

Paintball is Safe
When Done Right

With roughly 1.1 injuries per 10,000 participants a year at organized fields, paintball is one of the safer action sports — and the vast majority of injuries happen in unsupervised backyard play, not at staffed fields. These six rules keep it that way.

Wear an ASTM-Approved Paintball Mask

Only a mask rated to the ASTM F1776 paintball standard is safe — it must stay on at all times in active play zones. Airsoft masks and shooting glasses are NOT paintball-approved and will not stop a paintball. A paintball carries far more energy than an airsoft BB and can cause permanent eye injury through inadequate eyewear. Never remove your mask on the field — not to wipe sweat, not to look around. Absolute and non-negotiable.

Barrel Bag in Safe Zones

Cap your marker with a barrel plug or bag whenever you're not on the field. Even with the safety engaged — always cap the barrel. No exceptions, ever.

Respect the Velocity Limit

Markers must be chronographed under 280–300 fps depending on field rules. Higher velocities are the primary cause of paintball injuries. Always verify before you play.

Never Blind Fire

Always see where you are shooting before you fire. Shooting blindly around bunkers risks hitting players at dangerously close range or in restricted areas.

Call Yourself Out Honestly

When you're hit and marked, raise your hand immediately and walk out. The game works on the honor system — cheating invites additional shots and ruins the experience for everyone.

Always Follow Referees

Field referees are there for your safety and the game's integrity. Follow their instructions instantly and without question. When they call "cease fire" — stop immediately.

The Numbers Don't Lie

Independent research consistently shows paintball is one of the safest action sports available. The data below comes from the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association and insurance industry injury reports.

With proper protective gear, velocity control, and rule compliance, serious injuries are extremely rare. Paintball has maintained a strong family-friendly safety record since the 1980s.
